Before you go
South West Coast Path Safety
The Coast Path offers spectacular views, but steep climbs, exposed cliffs and changing tides deserve respect. A little preparation helps keep your adventure enjoyable.
01 · Check before you go
Weather and tides
- Check the local forecast, particularly wind speeds, gusts and visibility.
- Check tide times before using beaches, causeways or tidal crossings. Have a safe alternative if the crossing is unavailable.
- Avoid exposed sections during strong winds and rough seas.
- Tell someone your route and expected return time.
Check the correct location and date. This page provides general guidance, not live weather, tide or path conditions.
02 · Prepare for the walk
Plan for the terrain
- Coastal miles can be demanding: allow extra time for steep ascents, steps and uneven ground.
- Check for path closures and follow signed diversions.
- Check ferry times where your route involves an estuary crossing.
- Wear footwear with good grip. Carry water, food, waterproofs, warm layers, a charged phone and a map.
- Allow enough daylight to finish, and carry a torch for unexpected delays.
03 · Respect the coastline
Cliffs and the sea
- Stay on the marked path, well back from cliff edges.
- Keep away from the foot of cliffs: rockfalls can happen without warning.
- Never cross barriers or approach an edge for a photograph.
- Keep dogs on a lead near cliffs. If a dog falls or becomes trapped, call for help rather than attempting a rescue.
In a coastal emergency
Call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
Explain what has happened and give your location as accurately as possible. Do not put yourself at risk trying to rescue someone.
John’s reminder
Enjoy the views, pack the water, and leave enough energy for those final climbs — the Coast Path rarely finishes with a flat bit!
