Out through the prison gates
The Dartmoor Prison Break is a challenge with a difference: leave Princetown at noon and travel as far as possible before the clock runs out.
At 12 noon on Saturday 30 May, Barry and I set off from the gates of HMP Dartmoor. Thankfully, our release was entirely official. The task was to put as much distance as we could between ourselves and the prison during the next twelve hours, raising support for Dartmoor Search and Rescue along the way.
Our first stretch took us from Princetown towards Merrivale, where Vicki met us with some welcome encouragement. From there we left the straightforward road miles behind and crossed the moor towards Lydford. The scenery was excellent; the terrain made sure we earned every view.
After a snack stop at Lydford, we joined the West Devon Way and continued towards Bridestowe. By around 6pm we reached the White Hart, which offered the perfect twenty-minute rest. Despite being dressed like two fugitives, we behaved impeccably—and, remarkably, no alcohol was involved.
We pressed on beneath the A30 at Sourton, then through Thornton Cross, Ashbury Plantation and South Moor Plantation. Daylight gradually faded, head torches replaced sunshine, and the route became a test of steady progress and determination.
After walking 29 miles over the full twelve hours, we finished at Hatherleigh. Tired feet, aching legs and a considerable distance from the prison gates: mission accomplished. More importantly, the challenge helped support the volunteers of Dartmoor Search and Rescue, whose work makes the moor safer for everyone.
