A coastline worth every step
At 7am in Churston Ferrers, I joined a determined group of walkers at the start of Trek26 South Devon Coast. Ahead of us lay more than 26 miles of demanding terrain, completed to raise funds for the Alzheimer’s Society—a cause that touches millions of people and their families.
We set off clockwise towards Brixham, where the replica of Sir Francis Drake’s Golden Hind provided an early landmark. From the harbour, the route continued to Berry Head and its dramatic cliffs, before following the coast through Southdown Cliff, Coleton and Long Wood. Steep climbs tested the legs, narrow paths demanded concentration and the descents required careful footing.
The early autumn sunshine showed South Devon at its finest. Sweeping sea views, rugged headlands and the River Dart shimmering in the light provided some welcome distraction from the mileage—although, after enough coastal climbs, even the finest panorama can begin to look suspiciously like another hill.
Three well-organised pit stops divided the challenge into manageable sections. Each offered food and drinks, a chance to refill water bottles, change socks and briefly persuade tired legs that stopping altogether was not an option. Just as importantly, the breaks brought walkers together to share stories, encouragement and plenty of laughter. The volunteers and organisers were superb throughout.
The final miles became a real test of determination, with tired legs still facing steep climbs and descents. At 4.20pm, after nine hours and twenty minutes on the trail, I crossed the finish line back at Churston Ferrers. Exhaustion was quickly joined by exhilaration—and the knowledge that every step had helped raise awareness and vital funds for an important cause made the achievement even more rewarding.
